Memento Project

Memento
To have a memento of something is to keep the memory alive. I created mine on the combined memories from a large part of my life. I spent years in dance classes as a child and with said dance classes I would participate in performances and competitions.Since I was too young to really keep memories of the actual performances I only remember one thing in particular. I remember the costumes, the bright and flashy fabrics. My favorite as a child was a red and gold costume that was made with a traditional looking ballerina skirt.
When creating this I used a large amount of red tool and two types of golden beads. The two sides of this piece have different types of beads, to give a bit of contrast. That would be my three materials. I wanted to recreate the feeling of those large skirts they used to have me dance in.

3d to 2d

3D to 2D photos

I chose to work with the Architecture relief project. When making my 3d to 2d  I cut out the patter from the rose window on the top. I transferred it over to another file and began copying the cut out. With each cut out i changed the opacity of the layer, some lighter than others, to give more of a layered look. I copied the layer 29 times before deciding it was done and then added to color layers that were the same colors of the candles in the original image.
The image itself has a unique color and texture that was not present in the original image.

Body Happenings

For this project I created a Skirt that lit up from the inside out. I made sure that the lights could be easily controlled by the user and I painted the skirt to look like a starry sky. When making this skirt I was inspired by the stars that light up the night sky, something that is naturally beautiful. I had both the controllers for the light be able to reach the users hands so they can control the amount of light that is from the skirt.

Poetry Response

The poem I had chosen was The Words by Felicia Hunt. WHen reading this the first word that you read is rotting. This word is what caught my attention, and so I decided to utilize the imagery that comes to mind when reading this word. I chose to focus more on color and created a brown rotting color. I wanted the two pieces to contrast each other, so one became more organic and the other more linear and triangular.

Memento: Objects of Desire homework

Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss
The reason i chose this image for this quote was because this bear is made from one of my grandfathers shirts. This memento keeps me remembering my grandfather, even though I have lost him.

The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the 3 dimensional into the miniature, which can be enveloped by the body.
I chose this image to represent this quote because it is a souvenir that i purchased in New York City. It is a bike map of new york with a skyline image of the city screen printed on. It miniaturizes the city, which had seemed so large at the time of being there.

Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience
This was chosen specifically because this was a memento of my mother. She gave me these antique cups that she purchased many years ago from France. She travelled there when she was the same age as I was when she gifted these to me. It was not only a reminder for her, but some experience to share with me.

To have a Souvenir of the Exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy.
Though it is not an exotic object, i feel it is some sort of trophy of experience. This was take from my parents care after moving away from our home state back in 2005. I felt as if  this was a trophy for me and hence why I chose it for this quote.

The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale.
I chose this for the last quote because it is a map to the world. A desire to travel is something i feel is important to me, and makes me want to hold on to this map. I chose this fpr the quote because though the map makes the world seem small it is nothing in comparison to the actual size and scale of the world around me.

Soap Assignment part 2

Deconstructing Lonie

For the second part of the soap assignment we are to add 4 times and take away 4 times from one of our soap carvings. This is Lonie, my wolf who turned out a little bit off compared to the other. So I unfortunately will be destroying Lonie.

1st take away

I removed all of Lonie's limbs

2nd take away

I held him under a hair dryer for a few moments and then gave him an icy cold bath. It made him somewhat melty, but kept his form retained

3rd take away

I took a pencil and drove holes into what was now a soft soap

1st add on
I poured red ink into all the holes from earlier

4th take away
I then cut Lonie in half to let the ink pour out some

2nd add on

I then melted some wax and poured it on the two halves and some of the pieces cut off earlier

 3rd add on

I took some Gesso and poured it over the wax and soap it also mixed with the red ink, making some parts a pink color.

 4th add on
The final part was adding some nail polish to the half dried gesso when mixed together it created a marbled colorful look.

Architecture Assignment

Artist statement:

The Two Architecture styles I had chosen were Byzantine and Gothic. However, I was not drawn to the styles as a whole, but certain concepts of them. I enjoyed the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals and the large pillars of the Byzantine style. So i decided to create something like a portal, the rose window suspended by nothing but thread between two large pillars. Though my idea changed slightly along the assignment, I believe I captured the main focus behind the project. The finished product also includes two candles that glow on the wall behind the two large pillars.
